Charlestown, Nevis – The Nevis Housing and Land Development Corporation (NHLDC) has given support to the Nevis Literary and Debating Society that will be travelling to Tortola for the Leeward Islands Debating Competition. A brief presentation was held on Monday 21st February at the Charlestown Secondary School where the island’s youth Minister Hensley Daniel made a monetary contribution on behalf of the Nevis Housing & Land Development Corporation.
Daniel, who was filling in for Housing and Development Minister Robelto Hector, commended the Nevis Housing & Land Development Corporation for replicating the Nevis Island Administration’s interest in education.
“An investment in education pays the highest interest,” Daniel said.
“The Nevis Island Government takes education seriously. I think we can recall my addresses on the platform that our first priority is education, our second priority is education and our third priority is also education and we said that repeatedly.
“We have sought to set the tone from the top so that even though the Land and Housing Development Corporation is not an institution that focuses on education, all of the units of government are pointing in the same direction with regards to the level and importance of education and the development of our community,” Daniel stated.
Meanwhile, Principal of the Charlestown Secondary School and the Nevis Sixth Form College, Mr. Edson Elliot expressed appreciation for what he described as a “timely donation.”
“We’ve had to raise money for travelling to Tortola in order to be a part of this debate and we are very thankful to the corporate entities that have who came on board to assist with these travel expenses,” said Elliot.
Six students will be representing the island in the debate that is scheduled to take place starting 24th to 27th February.
